Energy Transition and Shore Power

EPI

Onshore power supply for cleaner ports

Shore power (OPS – Onshore Power Supply) enables vessels to shut down their auxiliary engines and connect directly to electricity from shore while at berth. This significantly reduces emissions of pollutants such as carbon dioxide (CO₂), sulfur dioxide (SO₂), nitrogen oxides (NOₓ), and particulate matter, improving air quality and the health of residents in nearby areas.

Benefits of Shore Power

  • Access to clean energy sources
  • Encourages reduced emissions from vessels
  • Improved air quality in port areas

Shore power

Cleaner energy at the berth

The Ports of Faxaflói already operate three self-service shore power stations at Miðbakki and Faxagarður. Plans are in place to build two similar stations at the main harbour pier in Akranes.

At Grandagarður, discussions are also underway with Brim and Veitur on developing shore power solutions for fishing vessels.

In Sundahöfn, Eimskip operates shore power connections for Dettifoss and Brúarfoss. Increased energy demand is expected with the introduction of new vessels and growing port activity.

  • Significantly reduced air pollution in port areas
  • Reduced noise from vessels in port
  • Supports carbon neutrality in port operations

Operational Efficiency

Pilot Project with Snerpa Power

o prepare for the operation of shore power at Skarfabakki, a pilot project has been launched with Snerpa Power regarding electricity procurement. By forecasting when electricity needs to be purchased, it can be done more cost-effectively. Under the agreement, Snerpa Power will provide the Ports of Faxaflói with an advanced energy management system specifically designed to predict the port’s electricity consumption and optimize the use of electrical infrastructure efficiently. The technology will simplify operations, improve energy efficiency, and support the Ports of Faxaflói’s ambitious sustainability goals.

The Snerpa Power software solution enables the Ports of Faxaflói to utilize real-time data and automate electricity usage planning, improve monitoring of energy costs, and meet contractual obligations. The solution also supports the Ports of Faxaflói’s future plans for new and more extensive shore power projects across port areas.

Energy transition for the environment

Energy transition is a key element in the Ports of Faxaflói’s vision for sustainable port operations. It refers to the shift from fossil fuels to clean and renewable energy sources, both on land and, where applicable, in vessels using port services.

The Ports of Faxaflói have already taken significant steps toward a greener future, including offering shore power connections and investing in the electrification of their own equipment. The goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve air quality, and support energy transition across the entire port value chain.
