The operation of the Ports of Faxaflói, as well as other ports in Iceland, is governed by the Harbour act No. 61 of 27 March 2003, which entered into force on 1 July 2003.

With the entry into force of the current Harbour Act, port operations fall under the Value Added Tax Act. The Directorate of Internal Revenue has issued guidelines on VAT related to port operations.
