Prevention is the cornerstone of our operations
Prevention plays a key role in port safety, as it helps prevent accidents, damage, and incidents before they occur. Through structured preventive measures, risks can be identified, hazards assessed, and actions taken to ensure a safe working environment for everyone working in or visiting the port. This applies to employees, ship crews, and port visitors alike.
Effective prevention also contributes to environmental protection by reducing the likelihood of oil spills, pollution, and other incidents that may have serious impacts on marine ecosystems and surrounding communities. It ensures that port operations run smoothly and responsibly. By emphasizing education, regular monitoring, and response planning, a strong safety culture can be built that protects people, assets, and nature.

Prevention awards based on culture
In 2024, Faxaflóahafnir received the VÍS Prevention Award in the category of smaller companies, in recognition of its strong safety culture and for placing safety first in all its operations. The VÍS Prevention Awards are granted to companies that excel in safety and serve as role models for others in this field. At Faxaflóahafnir, there is, among other things, an active reporting system for incidents that may create hazards in the environment. This reporting system, along with strong education, employee training, and information sharing with port users, are all part of building a safety culture reflected in the very low accident rate at Faxaflóahafnir.
“By the nature of its operations, much of the activity around Faxaflóahafnir takes place in and around the sea, making it important to build a strong safety culture among staff through both education and training,” says Jón Þórir Sveinsson, Safety Manager at Faxaflóahafnir.
Inga Rut Hjaltadóttir, Managing Director of Operations at Faxaflóahafnir, Jón Þórir Sveinsson, Safety Manager at Faxaflóahafnir, and Þórdís Lóa Þórhallsdóttir, Chair of the Board of Faxaflóahafnir, received the VÍS Prevention Award.
